Nirvana 10

NIRVANA 10
[I added the title later]

Watching Nirvana's Sold Live DVD. Just started, so don't really know which all songs r covered. But in the meanwhile I thought I should put forth my 10 ten Nirvana songs.

If I do this, it would also be like shooting me in the foot, coz then does it that I don't like all the other songs....?? Which I do. Say, I like all of Nirvana's albums and each album has at least 10 songs, so I could easily pick one album and that becomes my top 10 list. This will be too easy. And then easy never went to Seattle, so why should I?

Would the other albums suffer due to this limited choice? Not to get too much into everything else, let me just give you the top 10. In reverse order...

Number 10...
Wait. I actually never did this before. So first I have to go through the whole process of picking 10 Nirvana songs and then putting them in the reserve order.

I just have to pull a few from each album 'coz each one has at least a few gems (and in Nirvana's case - a lot more...!)

The albums then...

1989: Bleach
1991: Nevermind
1993: In Utero
1994: MTV Unplugged in New York
1996: From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah
1992: Incesticide
2002: Nirvana
2004: With the Lights Out
2005: Sliver: The Best of the Box

Also would like to thank Wikipedia & Youtube for all the content and thanks to all the fans that put the content online for me to have a look at. Running through the top, here we go...

[There was that period in between where I went through all the albums and listed the tracks I liked.]

Well, I just ended up listing all the songs I like (more than the others) from each album and I have somewhere about close to 22.
Now I have to put them in order and discard the ones which did not make the top 10. Tough choice!

Here are the 22. Again, this is just my opinion from today. It could change tomorrow and maybe next friday, you might see a different list from me. So no hard feelings for any Nirvana fan.

In no particular order...

about a girl - bleach
smells like teen spirit
in bloom
come as you are
polly
breed
lithium
on a plain
something in the way
heart shaped box - in utero
rape me
dumb
pennyroyal tea
all apologies
jesus doesnt want me for a sunbeam - unplugged
the man who sold the world
oh me
lake of fire
where did you sleep last night
mollys lips - incestiside
son of a gun
you know you're right - nirvana

Now, I’m going to listen to each song again and narrow it down to 10.

About a girl - this stays on the list as I like all the versions of the song but the one on Bleach is the best.
Smells like teen spirit - like a lot of people, there were days when I identified myself and Nirvana with just one song. This was the one.
Come as you are - this is more like an anthem.
Polly - I like this, maybe more from the unplugged version. Will have to listen to all 3 versions once more before I make my mind
Lithium – honestly, I almost missed putting this on my 10 list. [Technically I had selected 9 songs and I thought I had 10…!] It would have been a shame.
Rape me - I always liked the song. ppl might think, the title is too much of a violation of human rights(nauseating) but to make a song with such a title and make it sound like a 'come as you are' - could easily be someone's anthem.
Jesus dont want me for a sunbeam - it’s from the gut. I have to feel it to like that song.
The man who sold the world – it’s my signature.
Where did you sleep last night - love this one.
You know you're right – If only this was part of ‘Nevermind’. Well, nevermind

And so we have ten. Let’s see which all I missed.
In bloom - this defines the opening of any song. Kurt could have just finished the song on the first 4 lines. Breed - I don’t care....well, you know the rest of the song.

Let me not make this the missed top 10.
Sorry for losing focus.
Let’s get back to business.
The top 10….!

While I'm doing so (listening to those 10 songs over and over), I also have to remember what Rob Gordon (John Cusack) said in 'High Fidelity'
"The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules. Anyway... I've started to make a tape... "

So I'm going to discard the top 10 and make it the nirvana 10. In the order I feel will make a great compilation.

Come as you are –Nevermind.
Smells like teen spirit –Nevermind.
Polly – Nevermind.
About a girl - Unplugged
The man who sold the world - Unplugged
Jesus doesn’t want me for a sunbeam – Unplugged
Where did you sleep last night - Unplugged
Rape me – In Utero
Lithium - Nevermind
You know you're right - Nirvana

Coming soon…
