I just came back frm reading a post published by Amit. So wht shldn't I write one. Haven't written something in a long time and I could use this opportunity to kill time in office. Footbal like cricket has always been a part of my life. My bro played football for his school so relatively I always sucked at football.
Here's something not many people know, I even tried out for the college football team - left center position (terminologies during those days was borrowed from limited knowledge of professional sports)I actually made it in the team but couldn't play as I was told to stop wearing my glasses and get contacts if I had to survive in the team.
Basic rule - If sports involved unnecessary expenses than I wasnt playing. Coz my parents weren't paying. And I was sent to college to study. NOT to play football.
Buying a 5 rs tennis/rubber ball was fine.even contributing for the bat and stumps was ok.But spending 1000s just coz I wanted to play football was never ok. And I never played football while in school...!!! Was I on the school football team..??
Ok - we are getting sentimental here. Lets focusing on the World cup..
Unlike Amit - I dont think I have specific World cup moments. I just know a few names - a few matches.
Football for me is fun. Another way to kill 90 mins in front of the tv. And you always have a favourite to support. Its more like betting on horses. There's no money involved. Just some emotional attachement with the players and the team.
Players i knew and liked - thanks to some of the matches telecast on Doordharshan and the later shows on ESPN / Star Sports..
Maradona - his hand of god goal - his drugs abuse and his latest bout with obesity.
Ruddi Guillet - Actually the whole dutch team was cool - Marco Van Basten, Mark Overmars, Dennis Bergkamp, De Boer brothers, Patrick Kluivert, Edwin Van Der Sar, I guess I'll have to look up on the net for the rest. Maybe what was most appealing about them was Orange. I had never seen so many orange coloured people at any given time. Well - the fact that the particular shade of Grey was Orange registered when I saw the pictures in the newspaper the next day.
Italy, Germany, England in recent years - thanks to espn - EPL and bechkem. Brazil hve been the favs and its more fun supporting the underdogs...so they r not on this list.
Abt this World Cup, I almost had the chance of watchin this one live if i wld hve been on another projbut if i did tht - i dont think i wld hve every had the chance to go to Velvet lounge.
So good I made the choice btwn World Cup in Germany n a discoteque in Bombay.
Woh lamhen..Woh Baatein..Koi Na Jane..
